We often pray that God would “be with us.” What do we mean by this? For Matthew’s gospel, it is communal not individual: that the people understand themselves to have Jesus in their presence when they welcome the “little ones of faith” (18:5), when they forgive (18:20), when they receive the bread and wine (26:25-27), and when they go and make disciples (25:40 and 28:19-20).
