Jesus turns to the audience and says, “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you...on my account” (Matt 5:11). The key words are “on my account.” Some Christians distract us by claiming that they are persecuted for following Christ, but really are furthering only the politics of grievance. Real persecution of Christ-followers is happening in the world, and they need our support and willingness to use our privilege and power to bless the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure of heart, and the peacemakers.
